Rats enjoy their food a great deal and here they get a little of everything. Variety
is indeed the spice of life!
Adults are fed on a good quality mix loosely based on the Shunamite diet. This is
supplemented with green veg 2/3 times a week, curly kale is excellent for rats and
is one of natures super foods! They also get whatever is available in the form of
table scraps which they enjoy a great deal. Bio yoghurt is given regularly.
All pregnant and lactating mums are fed the same but supplemented with quality foods
to ensure they can provide for their own as well as their kittens needs. Mums get
Lactol in a separate water bottle, fresh every day as well as extra protein in the
form of chicken, scrambled egg and fish poached in milk. They get a breakfast of
oats with kitten milk and their main protein meal in the evening. As the kittens
start to wean I add E.M.P. egg food and quality cat food with Birds Eye steam fresh
rice and veg. This continues until they go to their new homes. Youngsters are fed
a wide and varied diet from when they first start eating solids to ensure they reach
their potential and are vibrant healthy youngsters, all go to their forever homes
with diet and care instructions as well as a bag of food to ensure they continue
to get what they need.
CAGE SUBSTRATE
I use BedXcel in all my cages, it's a very efficient bedding in that all debris whether
poops or otherwise fall through the cardboard squares onto the bottom of the cage
thus meaning that the rats are kept separate from the mess they create! It’s also
good at absorbing moisture. I use Biocatolet cat litter in the litter trays.
THINGS TO CONSIDER IF YOU ARE THINKING OF KEEPING PET RATS.
Rats can live 2-3 years and have needs that must be met during their life time, these
are - the company of other rats of the same sex unless neutered, veterinary care
when needed , freedom from fear and distress , food , housing , bedding , toys ,
exercise , mental stimulation , time out of the cage and love and affection from
you! Rats are a joy and are the most wonderful of pets, they're clever, affectionate
and loyal, the more you put in the more they give back!
Make sure you know what their needs are and whether you can provide for their needs
before hand! Once you’re organised and get your rats – you’ll never look back! You'll
wonder how you ever lived without fancy rats in your life!
